How Many Treats Can a Dog Have a Day?
Treating your dog is one of life's great joys, for both of you. But how much is too much? Here's the simple rule of thumb.
The 10 percent rule. Vets generally suggest treats make up no more than about 10 percent of your dog's daily calories, with the other 90 percent coming from a balanced main diet. Treats are the fun extra, not the meal.
Adjust dinner on chew days. A big, long lasting chew can pack in a fair few calories, so on chew days it's worth trimming their dinner a touch to keep things balanced. Nobody wants a chunky pooch.
Little and often works. For training, break treats into tiny pieces so your dog gets loads of rewards without loads of calories. It's the number of wins that matters to them, not the size.
Watch the waistline. If your dog is piling on weight or has a sensitive tummy, lean towards low fat, single protein natural chews and keep an eye on portions.
