What Size Dog Bowl Does Your Dog Need?

Bowl too small and dinner's a struggle. Bowl too big and portions go haywire. Here's how to get it just right.

Match it to your dog. As a rough guide, little dogs do well with a smaller bowl, medium dogs a mid size, and big breeds a larger one. The bowl should comfortably hold a full meal with a bit of room to spare.

Think about the food. If you feed wet food, soaked kibble or a big raw portion, you'll want a bit more capacity. Dry feeders can usually go a touch smaller.

Comfort counts. Your dog should be able to eat without their whole face disappearing into the bowl or their nose banging the bottom. Flatter faced breeds often prefer a shallower, wider bowl.

Two bowls, or one? Many owners keep a separate bowl for water so it's always topped up and clean, and a dinner bowl that gets washed after every meal.
