How Should a Dog Collar Fit?

A well fitting collar is comfy, safe and stays put. Too tight and it rubs, too loose and it slips off. Here's how to nail the fit.

The two finger rule. You should be able to slide two fingers snugly between the collar and your dog's neck. That's the sweet spot: secure enough not to slip over the head, loose enough to be comfy.

Check for slipping. If you can pull the collar over your dog's ears without undoing it, it's too loose and an escape risk. Tighten it a notch.

Watch for rubbing. Bald patches, redness or your dog scratching at their neck can mean the collar's too tight or sitting in one spot too long. Loosen it and check the fit.

Recheck regularly. Puppies grow fast, coats change with the seasons, and weight goes up and down. Give the fit a quick check every few weeks and after grooming.
