How to Get Rid of Wet Dog Smell

Ah, eau de wet dog. That unmistakable pong after a rainy walk. Here's why it happens and how to send it packing.

Why it happens. The smell is mostly damp fur, where moisture stirs up the natural oils and micro organisms living on your dog's coat. The wetter and longer they stay damp, the stronger the whiff.

Dry them quickly. The single best fix is to get your dog properly dry, fast. A thirsty microfibre robe or mitt whisks away the moisture before the smell has a chance to settle in.

Keep bedding fresh. A damp dog flopping onto their bed transfers the pong, so wash bedding regularly and let it dry fully. Same goes for that favourite blanket on the sofa.

Regular grooming helps. Brushing and the odd bath keep the coat clean and cut down on the oils and debris that fuel the smell in the first place.

Air it out. Pop a window open and let damp rooms breathe. Fresh air does wonders.
